Do I need to do a Powerboat Level 1?

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course encompasses the RYA Powerboat Level 1 syllabus so you can get started with the Level 2. The RYA Powerboat Level One is a one day course designed for people who don’t plan to venture far from shore i.e. if you’re using your boat on a small lake or don’t leave a harbour. The syllabus includes things like mooring and handling a boat in a marina.

I’ve been boating for a few years – can I do my RYA Powerboat Advanced?

We suggest that all students follow the RYA Course structure i.e. start with RYA Powerboat Level 2 and the RYA VHF Marine Radio course follow the pathway to wherever you desire. That said we appreciate that everyone has a different background – if you aren’t sure where to start give us a call on 0870 908 9336 or we can book a one day personal tuition session where our instructors will support and advise you to make sure you achieve everything you want.

What happens if I fail my course?

The RYA Powerboat Courses don’t have exams in, instead your instructor will ‘assess’ your ability throughout the course. The vast majority of our students pass their course without any trouble. If you are concerned feel free to call us on 0870 908 9336 and we will explain what will be taught.

I’ve never been on a boat – which course is for me?

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course is perfect for beginners or anyone who hasn’t had any formal training. The Powerboat Level 2 covers everything you’ll need for short passages on a Powerboat around coastal or non-tidal waters. If you require something more specific please contact us and we can arrange a private session for you and your crew.

My boat is a fishing/cabin boat – Is the RYA Powerboat Level 2 still applicable?

Yes! The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course applies to just about any power driven boat up to (and sometimes over)12 meters.  All of our instructors have a vast array of experiences from professional race boat driving to motorboat delivery work; as a result they will be able to advise best practice for your personal boat. We also have a displacement craft which we can use to teach a variety of boat handling techniques and demonstrate the different characteristics.

Do I have to do the course on consecutive days?

Typically the RYA Powerboat Level 2, Intermediate and Advanced Powerboat courses are taught over two consecutive days, however we also run the courses over 3 or 4 shorter days or on consecutive Saturdays or Sundays.

Can I do it just for fun?

Yes! If you are interested in boating and have always wanted to do it – or have a friend or relative who does – then the RYA Powerboat Level 2 is a fantastic way to spend two days on the water.
